Þetta Reddast! This Icelandic phrase, displayed prominently as you enter the airport, means “go with the flow and it will work out okay” and, as their motto, reflects their approach to life; embrace change, respect nature and find humor amidst the inevitable challenges. Living in a land shaped by dramatic natural forces, Icelanders have learned that staying nimble is the best way to find footing within nature’s unpredictable moods. The stunning and dramatic landscape have helped develop a resilient spirit and find the (sometimes dark) humor in situations. This week, we discovered it was also the best way to experience and reap the rewards of our Icelandic adventure, both on and off the mat.

Yoga’s motto, “grow like the lotus, finding balance & beauty within life’s unpredictability” is similar to Iceland’s. Both emphasize finding joy and peace by embracing change and living in the present moment. Both recognize our interconnection & responsibility to the natural world. Each day, we wove this theme into our pre and post adventure yoga practices and were often rewarded by om-mazing backdrops of sun rising, seals swimming, clouds painting masterpieces in the sun set, and, my favorite ocean’s rhythm. Off the mat, as our guide and team on the ground adapted & guided our adventures to best experience Iceland’s could offer (ice caves, crashing waterfalls, a goat recovery retreat), we were greeting with incredible experiences, fresh and fantastic Icelandic food, crisp and clean air….. and, of course, delightful hospitality from people who have learned the best way to live life’s roller coaster is to remain in awe of the gifts that are available to us in the present.…to find delight and humor in our connection with nature, with each other.
